Dean's Welcome Message

Welcome Message From the Dean

“I am proud to extend to you a warm welcome to the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences (FPPS), the premier institution for Pharmacy education in Ghana and the sub-region.  Contemporary education in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences provide knowledge in the physical, chemical and biological sciences and a skilful application of these to the world of humans to improve health.  This is what FPPS has excellently done since its inception in 1953.  FPPS offers you a congenial environment for teaching and learning that enables you to acquire knowledge and skills to become employable, create employment and prepare you to become a responsible adult in the global community.  Our relentless commitment to achieve our goals has seen us providing not less than 95 % of the nation’s pharmaceutical manpower.  We have a reputation built on our long record of leadership in pharmacy education, dedication to pharmaceutical science research and the remarkable achievements of our graduates in the provision of pharmaceutical services in the nation and beyond.

To respond to the emerging changes in pharmacy education and practice,we introduced the Pharm D programme to replace the traditional BPharm in 2012. This year, 2015,  will see the graduation of our last batch of B.Pharm students. The Pharm D programme is more patient-oriented to equip our graduates to play their effective roles as experts on medicines in the health care team. Nothwithstanding this, we have maintained, and even strengthened the teaching, learning and research in the pharmaceutical sciences as a backbone for our students to understand and appreciate the mechanistic basis of drug action and disease management. This approach is also meant to prepare adequately those students who would want to pursue a career in academia and other areas of practice including the pharmaceutical industry.

We have two vibrant student associations:  the Ghana Pharmaceutical Student Association (GPSA) and the Ghana Herbal Medical Students Association (GHEMSA), which see to the welfare of the students.

At FPPS the proverbial Ghanaian hospitality is extended to all students who enrol on our programmes.  We therefore have international students coming from the Gambia, Ivory Coast, Togo, Nigeria and Cameroon.
It is important to affirm that the FPPS experience is demanding, but it is exceedingly rewarding.  You therefore have to make FPPS your choice if you are looking forward to a wonderful future as a professional in the pharmaceutical sciences.

I now invite you to visit our website to learn more.
