GPSA, KNUST Actively Involves Herself On An International Level In The Antimicrobial Resistance Crusade

“The thoughtless person playing with penicillin treatment is morally responsible for the death of the man who succumbs to infection with the penicillin-resistant organism.”  In 1945, which also marks the year Sir Alexander Fleming received a Nobel prize for his scientific revolution; the invention of penicillins, he uttered these "prophetic" words of caution. And now in 2023, his prediction of an imminent future has long been fulfilled.

The health community, as custodians of the well-being of people is very much aware of this fact and that has inspired the annual Antimicrobial Resistance Week. From the 18th-24th November, 2023,

Ghana Pharmaceutical Students' Association (GPSA), KNUST was actively engaged in this highly indispensable crusade against antimicrobial resistance (AMR) which has at the moment become a global emergency.

The week-long program was riddled with insightful activities. Credit goes to the GPSA Health Committee, International Relations Office, and Media Committee for overseeing the events that unfolded.

From the 18th-23rd, the public was sensitized to the concept of AMR, the emergence and spread of AMR, common viral infections in which we wrongly use antibiotics, the causes of AMR, and the effect of AMR, respectively.

The Association clinched the crusade with a panel discussion on Google Meet held on Friday, 24th November, 2023 at 5: 30 GMT.

The highly anticipated webinar was themed; "The Blue Couch - An AMR Conversation". The discussion was moderated by Priscilla Nweatena Buadi, the International Relations Officer of GPSA-KNUST, Ghana and Keumouo Ulrich, CEPHARM Uds, Cameroon.

The distinguished speakers for this event included:

  • Dr. Phumzile Skosana, a lecturer at Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University, School of Pharmacy in South Africa, with qualifications in BPharm, MPharm, and a PhD in Pharmacy.
