The KNUST College of Health Sciences (CHS) continues to affirm its distinctive place in the leadership and transformation of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), with two of its distinguished academic leaders occupying the highest office of the University in succession.
On Saturday, 1 August 2026, Professor Christian Agyare, former Provost of the College of Health Sciences and distinguished academic in Pharmacy, was formally invested as the 13th Vice-Chancellor of KNUST by the Chancellor, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, at a colourful ceremony held at the Great Hall.
His investiture marks another significant milestone in the history of the College, following the remarkable tenure of Professor (Mrs.) Rita Akosua Dickson, the immediate-past Vice-Chancellor and an affiliate of the College of Health Sciences. Professor Dickson made history as the first female Dean of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and subsequently became the first female Vice-Chancellor of KNUST.
Together, their leadership journeys represent a powerful testament to the depth of academic excellence, institutional leadership and transformative scholarship nurtured within the College of Health Sciences.
The investiture of Professor Agyare comes at a defining moment in KNUST's history, as the University marks 75 years of advancing knowledge, innovation and national development. His elevation to the University's highest executive office further strengthens the College of Health Sciences' contribution to the University's leadership trajectory.
In formally investing Professor Agyare, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II charged him to preserve KNUST's rich heritage, strengthen its legacy and lead with integrity, consultation and visionary stewardship.
The Chancellor described the occasion as another important chapter in KNUST's history and reminded the new Vice-Chancellor that he had inherited far more than an office.
“You inherit more than an office. You inherit a heritage, painstakingly built over seventy-five years by visionary leaders, dedicated scholars, committed staff and generations of students,” Otumfuo said.
He further urged Professor Agyare to build on the achievements of previous administrations, stressing that effective leadership is about preserving what works, improving what requires attention and creating opportunities for future generations.
His remarks also recognised the distinguished contribution of Professor Rita Akosua Dickson, whose tenure as Vice-Chancellor advanced KNUST's growth and strengthened its reputation.

“I therefore stand here not to begin a new journey, but to build upon this proud legacy; to preserve the excellence we have inherited, to deepen our impact, and to lead this great University to even greater heights of eminence and global distinction,” he said.
His vision is centred on strengthening KNUST as a globally recognised centre of excellence through innovation, entrepreneurship, impactful research and transformative teaching, while contributing meaningfully to Ghana's industrial and socio-economic development.
To translate this vision into action, the Vice-Chancellor outlined seven strategic priorities for his four-year tenure: transformative education and organisational mindset development; entrepreneurship-driven research and innovation; quality management and human capital development; sustainable and climate-resilient infrastructure; digital transformation through artificial intelligence; strategic collaborations and global visibility; and financial stewardship for long-term sustainability.
Leading the Future with Innovation and AI
Professor Agyare placed particular emphasis on digital transformation and the strategic integration of artificial intelligence into the University's academic and operational systems.
He challenged KNUST to move beyond simply responding to technological change and instead position itself at the forefront of emerging technologies in Africa's higher education landscape.
“The question before us is not whether KNUST will engage with AI, but whether we will lead or be led,” he stated.
His emphasis on innovation, responsible AI, research and entrepreneurship resonates strongly with the College of Health Sciences' own commitment to advancing health through cutting-edge research, interdisciplinary collaboration and innovative solutions to societal challenges.
A Collective Charge to the KNUST Community
The new Vice-Chancellor also called for unity and shared responsibility, stressing that the transformation of KNUST cannot be achieved by one office or individual.
Drawing inspiration from the story of a janitor who saw his work as contributing to the mission of putting a man on the moon, Professor Agyare reminded the University community that every individual has a meaningful role to play in advancing KNUST's mission.
“I have a charge! You have a charge! And indeed, KNUST has a charge to keep, a sacred responsibility to educate, research, innovate, and serve humanity,” he declared.
He concluded with a powerful call to collective action: “Together, we will move from excellence to eminence, from promise to impact, and from aspiration to transformation.”
