The College of Health Sciences (CHS), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with the Ghana College of Pharmacists (GCP) to advance postgraduate training and build a highly skilled pharmaceutical workforce for national development.

This commitment was underscored when the Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Fred Stephen Sarfo, received a three-member Academic Board delegation from the Ghana College of Pharmacists, led by its President, Professor Kwame Ohene Buabeng, on Monday, 10th August 2026. The visit also afforded the delegation the opportunity to officially welcome Professor Sarfo following his assumption of office as Provost on 3rd August 2026.
Leading the delegation, Professor Ohene Buabeng reaffirmed the Memorandum of Understanding between the Ghana College of Pharmacists and the KNUST College of Health Sciences, describing it as an important framework for strengthening institutional collaboration between the two institutions.

He highlighted the joint Membership/MPhil and PhD/Fellowship programmes currently being developed between the two Colleges, with the first cohort expected to commence in the 2026/2027 academic year. According to him, the partnership presents a significant opportunity to strengthen the training of the pharmaceutical workforce for policy development, professional practice, academia and national development.

The President further noted that the Ghana College of Pharmacists, which has existed for more than 15 years, has trained approximately 200 clinical pharmacists across various specialisations. These professionals serve as preceptors in the training of students and contribute to the continued development of pharmacy practice. The College currently operates through six faculties, including Social and Administrative Pharmacy, Public Health Pharmacy, Drug and Herbal Medicine Discovery, Development and Production, Community and Family Health Pharmacy, Clinical Pharmacy, and Quality Assurance.

Responding to the delegation, Professor Sarfo expressed his appreciation for the visit and welcomed the opportunity to further advance the partnership. He encouraged the Ghana College of Pharmacists to explore innovative approaches to promoting the joint programmes, including the production of a short video to provide prospective applicants with a clearer understanding of the programmes, their novelty and future prospects.

He also emphasised the importance of creating opportunities for prospective candidates to engage directly with programme representatives for further information and guidance. Professor Sarfo further called for stronger collaboration with other clinicians to promote inter-faculty engagement and multidisciplinary training.

The Provost assured the delegation of his support and indicated his readiness to use his office to facilitate the progress and successful implementation of the joint programmes.

In his closing remarks, Professor Ohene Buabeng thanked the Provost for the warm reception and expressed the Ghana College of Pharmacists' readiness to work closely with the College of Health Sciences under his leadership. He noted that the partnership aligns with the shared commitment to human resource training and development.

The meeting marks another important step in the College of Health Sciences' efforts to build strategic partnerships that expand opportunities for advanced professional training, foster interdisciplinary collaboration and contribute to the development of the human resources needed to address Ghana's healthcare and national development priorities.
